Delaware Baptist Church was established in 1889; it was originally named Young Peoples Tabernacle under the leadership of the late Reverend Andrew Jackson. At the time, the church was located on the corner of Sixth Street between I and K Streets in Southeast. The church later relocated to 1105 Delaware Avenue, SE. A new location inspired the official name, Delaware Avenue Baptist Church. The church remained at this location for over 50 years. During this time, the church membership outgrows this location; and sought out a larger edifice.
On June 16, 1984, Delaware Avenue Baptist Church moved to its new location at 1301 V Street SE, where it sits today. Over the course of Delaware’s long and iconic history with the Ward 8 community many changes have taken place to benefit the wellbeing of the people of Ward 8.
Reverend Roy J. Holbrook continues that engagement with the community. From the time he was elected as Delaware Avenue Baptist Church’s Pastor on September 19, 2009, to present; he’s been serving the Ward 8 community. He meets with the various community stakeholders to discuss the blight that’s affecting Ward 8 and work on finding solutions to the problems. To ease some of the communities’ burden Delaware offers diverse activities and events, and programs, which the community is invited to attend.
